Fruitful Vine Focus: Marijuana Part 1

This week’s Focus is Marijuana. In recent days, quite a few of the individuals, who have declared themselves 2020 presidential candidates, have indicated their support for federal legalization of marijuana. On February 28th, Senator Cory Booker reintroduced a bill titled the Marijuana Justice Act. It would remove cannabis from the list of controlled substances, and would also expunge all records of charges for anyone that has ever been arrested for a marijuana-related offense. Currently, eight states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, and this bill would give financial incentives for other states to also legalize marijuana.

Current pew research polls indicate that 57% of Americans are in favor of legalizing marijuana. Many people support the use of medicinal marijuana. All medications have potential side effects and warnings. That is why we pay a physician to ensure that the medications she or he prescribes is appropriate for us and to ensure benefits outweigh the risks or side effects. This week’s focus will not address medicinal marijuana. That is a decision between the patient and their physician. Here, the focus is on recreational marijuana, specifically for individuals under the age of 25.
