Fruitful Vine Focus: Marijuana Part 2

This week’s focus is marijuana and the impact of recreational use particularly by individuals that are under the age of 25.

As more and more states consider the legalization of marijuana, and there is even a federal bill that would legalize marijuana, it is important that we all understand the real dangers of this harmful drug.

When a person smokes pot, their risk of having a heart attack within the first hour of smoking is almost five times higher than their normal heart-related risk. The chemicals in marijuana include ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde. These are some of the same chemicals in tobacco, which was linked to cancer many years ago. Additionally, marijuana is usually smoked in a joint or blunt without a filter, as compared to cigarettes. As a result, patients who smoke marijuana see their doctor for a lung-related illness more often than those who do not smoke marijuana or tobacco. Is it worth a quintupled risk of a heart attack, and an increased risk in lung-related illness for a recreational high? Tune in tomorrow for information on how Marijuana impacts the brain.
