Fruitful Vine Focus: Scriptures for Family Relationships Part 5

Sometimes we can look at family-related scriptures, and wonder about the apparent inequality between men and woman that is illustrated. The Bible is the Word of God and is applicable in all cultures. However, we often need to do our best to understand the culture of Biblical times before we start making an application to our own lives. In today’s passage, Peter is giving instructions to husbands. He stated In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered. 1st Peter 3:7

As we read this passage today, it is easy to focus on Peter naming ladies as “weaker”, and therefore, completely overlook the absolutely pivotal statement of equality. To illustrate the complete inequality of Biblical times, hear these words from Marcus Cato, who was Roman Senator chronologically near the time of Christ. He said, “If you catch your wife in adultery, you can kill her with impunity; she, however, cannot dare to lay a finger on you if you commit adultery, nor is it the law.” So a man can kill his wife without consequences, but a woman does not have the right to do anything. When Peter, in that context, said that a husband’s prayers will be hindered if he is not treating his wife as an equal through Christ, he articulated a true game changer. Husbands, are you really treating your wife in a way that causes her to feel loved, honored, and cherished?
